Frontman Gillette followed his mother’s footprints to the limelight. Anita Gillette is a Tony-nominated Broadway star and later a successful movie actress and television star. Despite learning a great deal about performance from family friends such as Liza Minelli and Irving Berlin, growing up around world-renowned performers did bring a bit of intimidation along with it. However, playing guitar outside of the shadow of legends helped him find his singing voice. He went on to play in bands on the East Coast while an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, sharing the stage with the likes of Tommy Keane, The Replacements, and Jason and the Scorchers. Gillette became a part of Seattle’s burgeoning music scene at an interesting time. How interesting? He played the famed venue, the Crocodile, opened for Government Mule, and Kurt Cobain lived down the street from him. Gillette went on to earn a law degree, eventually moving to Montana where he practices law while also fronting The Waiting. As one might expect from a musician who is also a Tom Petty enthusiast, Gillette is an avid collector of Rickenbacker guitars.
